PERTH, Dec 1 AAP - Main stories in today's edition of The West Australian:

P1: Marcus Meanwell, a champion athlete, lost his legs and an arm after being run over by a
goods train near his home - he also broke his back, leaving him paralysed.

P2: It was a black Friday for three criminals who decided to hold up a pharmacy in Myaree -
someone moved their getaway car and another followed them in a second stolen vehicle - one was
arrested.

P3: Australia had its second highest goods and services trade shortfall in October. Former
prime minister Paul Keating and his wife, Annita, have announced the end of their 23-year
marriage.

WORLD: Chaos rocked the corruption and sex trial of sacked Malaysian former deputy prime
minister Anwar Ibrahim when the judge sentenced a defence lawyer to three months jail for
contempt in Kuala Lumpur. Three years after Swiss banks became the target of a furore over
their business dealings with Nazi Germany, American car companies are accused of collaboration
with the Nazis. New Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen unveiled a coalition platform which aimed
to entice foreign investors.

FINANCE: ANZ shares slumped more than 5 per cent after Federal Treasurer Peter Costello
said that the Government would ban big bank mergers until there was more competition in
business lending. Oceanfast's chief yacht designer, Jon Bannenberg, said the company was
attempting to rebuild relationships with wealthy buyers of luxury yachts after its reputation
was damaged by poor after-sales service. Perth brokers have slapped a "hold" recommendation on
Australian Stock Exchange shares after the newly listed stock soared to a high of $9.24 before
closing $1.06 stronger at $8.97 on volume of 1.6 million shares.

SPORT: Even though the form of Michael Slater, Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting faltered in
the second Ashes Test which ended in a resounding victory for Australia, they are safe and
will play in the third Test match.
