Qld: Stay out of the water - 600 sharks in coast waterways

The Queensland government warns the Gold Coast's inland waterways are teeming withup to 600 sharks as a result of the severe drought.

The alarming estimate has come with a fresh government warning to residents and visitorsto stay out of the water on the tourist strip, unless bathing between the flags at patrolledbeaches.

Queensland Primary Industries Minister HENRY PALASZCZUK has singled out canal fronthome owners for becoming blase about using the water for recreation.

The minister says they should keep out of the canals because in those canals thereare upwards of 600 sharks.

Over the past two months sharks have attacked and killed two swimmers in Gold Coastcanal-fed lakes.

In the most recent tragedy, 84-year-old swimmer BOB PURCELL was mauled in BurleighLake on Saturday morning.

Mr PALASZCZUK says the government estimates the average size of the hundreds of canalsharks is two metres -- large enough to inflict a fatal wound.

The hunt for the shark that killed Mr PURCELL in Burleigh Lake will continue for about a week.
