Members of the Pilsen Mennonite Voluntary Service unit in Chicago recently had the chance to practise restorative justice. The triggering incident was a robbery and vicious vandalism of their unit house a year ago while they were at the MVS retreat in Missouri.
"We had a support committee meeting right after the break-in to talk about what we'd do if [the culprits] were caught," said Darla Knepp, one of the MVSers. (The others were Kristen Mathies, Rita Oswald and Jessica Phillips.) "We basically decided we wanted to do mediation instead of going to court."
